Southern Spirits Review

Happy Friday Readers!

 Today I wanted to review a light paranormal book to end the week on a good note. Southern Spirits by Angie Fox, is a novel that gives you all of the emotions. You get ghosts, romance, laughter, and pet skunks. When I started reading this book I honestly couldn't put it down, and stayed up half the night to finish it, because I had to see how it ended.

Verity is hated by the town she lives in because she decided to leave her slim ball of a fiancee at the alter. However when she accidentally traps a gangster ghost on her property, her world is turned upside down. When she is with the ghost she is able to see the other side, and see spirits. She learns to use this ability to help Ellis, the town Sheriff and her ex's brother. But will she be able to solve the mystery or will this mystery lead to her doom?

Verity has been put through a lot and has to change her life around to find a new job to support herself, and her pet skunk. You will love Verity and her no nonsense, won't take nobody's crap attitude. You also get to learn why she left the most eligible bachelor at the alter, and may even fall in love with the gangster ghost, Frankie. This book had me laughing out loud, and wishing I had my own gangster ghost to go on adventures with. If you love feel good stories with mystery thrown in, than this book needs to be on your shelf. This is one who done it that you don't want to miss! Plus there is many more adventures to come if you love this one!

Why I Don't Have A Favorite Genre

Happy Thursday!

 Today I decided to do a different post than what I have done before. I always get the question posed to me of what my favorite genre is, and I honestly have to say I love every type of genre. I love reading YA, Romance, Historical Fiction, Biography, Memoirs, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Fiction, True Crime, Mystery, recently getting more into poetry, and lots more categories. I know that some people do have a favorite genre, and honestly that is okay. I have learned that a lot of people only like to read certain books, and that is fine. As long as you love what your reading, and your reading than there is nothing wrong with it. My grandfather for example loves reading classics and biographies.It's just that I am slightly more different in deciding what I am going to read.

The first thing that draws me to a book is honestly the cover. When I see a cover that draws me in, I pick up the book and read the description. If the description seems really interesting to me than I will buy the book. However, even through a book does have a pretty cover, after reading the description my attention isn't caught than I won't buy the book, and will place it back on the shelf. I have also started to download samples of books on my Kindle that I maybe on the fence about, so I can see if it's a story that will capture my attention, before I spend the money to buy the book.

I also have to be in the mood to read a certain type of book, which I have learned is okay, because I know when the mood strikes I will have the chance to enjoy it. By doing this I have actually discovered many books that I have absolutely fallen in love with, and some I haven't really liked. I also love recommendations that are provided to me by co-workers and friends, which have also led me to authors that I have fallen in love with, and continue to read them when they put new books out.

Now granted, when I read biographies, they are normally on topics that I am interested in, however I am open to reading other one's it's just that I know these books will catch my attention more. It is also in my opinion that if I would have settled only on one genre than I would have missed so many amazing books and I would have missed so many amazing adventures that I have been on.

If you are like me and read any book that grabs your attention, no matter what genre it is, know that it is okay not to have a favorite, and it is okay to tell people I like every genre. When you love every genre, you get to go on so many adventures, and learn things you never knew before. Reading is a journey to various places with no end, and allows you to escape reality with each turn of the page. As long as we have books, and people love what they read, then no judgement should be passed on people who chose to live several lives. Never be embarrassed  by what you are reading. If you love it than you go ahead and read until your little heart is content. Don't afraid to be who you are and to read what you want, because you may just find your reading soulmate!

The Secret Daughter of the Tsar: A Novel of the Romanovs Review

 So today I will be reviewing a book that had me mesmerized and captivated until the very end. The Secret Daughter of the Tsar: A Novel of the Romanovs by the amazing Jennifer Laam. This book was the best book I have read in 2019 so far, plus I have always been obsessed with the story of the Romanovs, which lead me to getting this book in the first place.

I know a lot of people are hesitant about reading books that are told from multiple characters point of view, however the way Jennifer transports the reader over different timelines is so seamless that the story just keeps flowing together, and all of the empty spaces are filled in perfectly. The story starts with Lena who's timeline is the same as the Romanovs, Charlotte is after the tragedy of the Romanovs, and Veronica's is present time. These three women are each special and strong in their own right, and their stories play a bigger role in the novel. I'm trying not to say too much about this book, because I don't want to give anything away, because trust me when the bomb is dropped, you won't see it coming until the moment Jennifer wants you to. Let's just say when I read it, I was screaming in the bathtub.

This story made me laugh, cry, and think about the possibility of this being true. The tragedy of the Romanovs was horrible, but Jennifer provides the reader with a historical fiction novel, that does not romanticize or disrespect the tragedy in any sort of form. If you love stories that make you get lost in time, with mystery, suspense, and just love history, you need to read this amazing book!

The Vampire's Mail Order Bride Review

Happy Friday Fun Day!

  So today is an amazing day, because I am graduating with my Bachelor's degree today! So I wanted to review a funny romance story that deals with supernatural beings. The Vampire's Mail Order Bride by Kristen Painter is a laugh out loud romance story that you will want to read again and again.

As she gets to know Hugh, she discovers that not everything is as it seems, and that there is something going on in the town of Nocturne Falls. Can she accept the truth of what Hugh really is or will the truth be too much for her to take?

This story is told from two points of view, Delaney's and Hugh's. You will laugh, and be on the edge of your seat until the very end. This is one book you won't want to put down, and you will fall in love with all the characters. Good thing this is part of a book series, so that you are able to see other characters stories!

Branded Review

We made it to Friday everyone!

 Today I am going to be reviewing a YA book called Branded by Abi Ketner and Missy Kalicicki. This is a dystopian novel set in the future where criminals are punished in a certain way.

Lexi has been accused of a crime she didn't commit, and now she much be punished for it. When she gets thrown into the hole she is assigned a special guard, and gets a job at the hospital. She sees how people look at her brand, and sees how they are treated. There are a couple of times that Lexi gets in to trouble, and her guard has to watch out for her. Along the way she will realize the truth about the Commander and the truth about the hole. But will she find out the truth in time to save herself or will she be too late?

This is a very powerful story about one girl's journey to find herself and to prove her innocence. The authors draw you into the story, and make you feel exactly what Lexi is feeling. What I really loved about this book is Lexi starts out as a damsel in distress, but she finds her strength, and starts to stand up for herself. It's a book about a harsh future where you have to fight to survive, and there is a little love thrown into the mix along the way. This is one adventure you won't want to miss.

Dear Mr. Knightley Review

Happy Monday Guys!

  I hope everyone had a great weekend! Mine was busy trying to finish up homework before graduation, but I know it will be worth it in the end. Today I am going to be reviewing Dear Mr. Knightley by Katherine Reay. This is an Austen inspired book with the retelling of a book called Daddy Long Legs, that will play with your emotions, but in a good way.

Samantha Moore survived the worst time in her life by reading books and using the fictional characters from her stories to adapt her personality. She has trust issues, which in all honesty is understandable given the life she is living. While writing to Mr. Knightley, Sam starts to open herself up to the people around her, and even makes a couple of friends along the way. However when the true identity of Mr. Knightley is reveled, that trust that Samantha built up around her will start to crumble and she will start to wonder if she can ever trust anyone again.

This book will take you on an emotional roller coaster, it will make you laugh, cry, and just feel deep in your heart. I found a connection to Samantha because she is a book nerd who fell in love with the fictional characters that she reads about. I know when I find a really good book that draws me in, I start to have real feelings for the characters whether they are feelings of love or anger. I recommend this book to anyone who has fallen in love with a fictional character, and loves a good story where the main character goes on a journey to find herself.

Cleopatra's Moon Review

Happy Friday Readers!!

 So I have always been a fan of Ancient Egypt and Cleopatra, when I saw this book and read the description I knew I had to read it. Cleopatra's Moon by author Vicky Alvear Shecter is told from Cleopatra's daughter point of view. Vicky has taken historical aspects and blended them into a beautifully crafted story that will transport the reader to Ancient Egypt, and Ancient Rome.

Selene witnesses her parents death, and than is forced to travel to a city and live with people who hate her and her mother. She starts to notice certain things, and tries to live up to her family name, while navigating her life in Rome. She does fall in love with two different men, but in the end she picks the one that is best for her. This entire story is told from Selene's point of view and the reader gets a sense of what it was like for Cleopatra's children after the fall of Egypt.

Vicky pulls you into the story with the most amazing descriptions that will make you feel like you are in ancient cities yourself. She brings you on Selene's emotional roller coaster, and makes you want to learn more about the amazing place that was once Alexandria. You will also want to know more about Cleopatra, Anthony, Selene, and every character in this amazing story. The author leaves you a little historical note at the end to let you know what became of Selene and the man she chooses to live the rest of her life with.

This book is a must read for anyone who loves history, ancient Egypt, Cleopatra or the beautiful place that Alexandria once was.

From Here To You Review

Hello Fellow Readers!

 The book I am going to review today is From Here To You by the amazingly talented Jamie McGuire. Every book I have read of hers has pulled at my heart strings, and her characters are so real that you will feel a part of them. I have never been disappointed in any of Jamie's books, and this one blew me away yet again!

Darby knows that she is in a very bad relationship, but doesn't see anyway out of it, because she knows if she runs she will die. While panicking in a church bathroom, she discovers she is pregnant and knows that she has to leave the relationship for the sake of her child. She escapes and manages to find a job at a hotel in Colorodo Springs. While there she meets Trex, who wants Darby and will do anything to be with her, however he knows that something is wrong and he has to take things slow. You also get to hear about some of the Maddox brothers from the Beautiful Disaster series, but I am not telling you which ones. 

This book hit me really deep, because I was once in a horrible relationship just like Darby, where he was mentally abusive and that does something to a person. Darby's character was so close to how I felt that I could relate with her and everything she was going through. Also, might I dare say it but.....I found Trex to be sexier than Travis. Jamie knows how to bring the characters to life, and bring the reader into the story. Even if you haven't read anything by her before, you need to read this amazing story, because you won't be disappointed!

The Dressmaker Review

  I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving, I know I am full from all that food I ate. But it is also really good to spend time with family during the holidays. Today I am going to be reviewing The Dressmaker by Kate Alcott. This book has to do with a seamstress that finds herself on the Titanic during that fateful voyage.

Tess believes that being hired by a famous designer will open up doors for her, and along her adventure on the Titanic she doesn't expect to find love with two different guys. When Titanic hits the ice berg, Tess doesn't know if she is going to survive or if anyone is going to survive. Through her terrifying journey through the sinking of Titanic and the trials afterwords, the reader gets a behind the scenes look into one of histories worst disasters. I didn't even know they had trials after the sinking until after reading this book, and the author goes into a lot of detail that will leave you wondering just who was at fault for the unsinkable ship sinking.

This is such a beautifully written story, and it doesn't take away the tragedy of all the innocent lives lost on that night the titanic sank. Kate does the story justice, and through her character Tess, the reader is brought along on the journey for the good and the bad. After reading this, you get a sense of what those people went through, the one's that lost their lives, and the one's that survived.

Happy reading about a new point of view about the Titanic.

Juliet: A Review

Happy Wednesday!

 My favorite play by William Shakespeare has and always will be Romeo and Juliet. So today, I am going to be reviewing Juliet by Anne Fortier. I remember the day I picked up this book, I was walking around the bookstore looking for my next adventure when the title jumped out at me. I flipped the book around and the second I read the description, I knew that I had to have this book. It has now became one of my favorites that I have read over and over!

Along the way she meets characters, who have a huge part to play in the outcome, and that will help her get down to the truth of the story of the real Romeo and Juliet. Along the way she will have to learn to leave her comfort zone, and do things that she normally wouldn't do. Will she be able to find Romeo to save her or is he just a fictional character?

I absolutely loved the way Anne brings the reader into both the past and the present by telling the story from Julie's and Giulietta's points of view. Her take on Romeo and Juliet is so beautiful and gives Shakespeare's characters a new way to live in the modern world. Anne captures the essence of Shakespeare's writing while at the same time putting a new and interesting twist on the tale that we have all come to know. You will see characters and scenes in this book that give a whole new meaning to the scenes from the play. This is a must read for fans of William Shakespeare, and who love the story of the star crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet.

Fall in love with a pair of star crossed lovers all over again!

Sky In The Deep Review

  Today I am going to be reviewing Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young. This novel is about one girl's revenge against the people who took her brother, and her journey to discover the truth.

Eelyn isn't your normal seventeen year old, she is a warrior who isn't afraid to takes someones life to protect her own, and her family. When in the midst of battle, she sees her brother fighting on the side of the enemy, Eelyn knows that she needs to get down to the bottom of what is going on. She sets out on a journey by herself to bring her brother back home. They hold her captive in enemy territory, until one day the village is attacked, and she knows in order for them to survive she has to bring the clans together. Along the way, she will find truth, understanding, love, and justice.

What I really loved about Eelyn is that she is a fierce warrior, who can save herself, and doesn't rely on a man to save her. We need to see strong female characters, who are so life like that we can identify with them and see the strength within ourselves. The descriptive words in this book will make the scenes come to life in the readers minds and you will feel like you are experiencing everything right along with Eelyn. I will warn all readers, there are some descriptive scenes in this book with violence, and gore, but it isn't overdone and actually makes the story that more interesting.

 Today I am going to review The Loneliest Girl in the Universe by Lauren James. This book will take you into outer space, and one one wild ride. While reading this book you get to experience one girls loneliness as she lives among the stars in a spaceship. This story will get you in the mindset of asking yourself, could you really survive living on a spaceship in outer space for your entire life?

Communication starts between Romy and J, and through this communication you get to know the characters a little bit more. But is everything as it seems, that is what Romy will start to ask herself.

I don't want to give anything away from this amazing book, because I don't want to ruin the big bomb shell of an ending. This story takes the reader on a wild ride with twists, turns, mystery, suspense, and intrigue that will leave the reader guessing at the truth until the very end!

Gone Girl Review

Greetings Fellow Readers!

I hope every had a good Halloween. Today I will be reviewing another mystery story, with murder, and suspense all rolled into one. Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn, will take you on a wild ride, where you will have to guess who did it, and try to figure out what is really going on. This story was also made into a movie, which I watched after reading the book, and it wasn't a bad movie, however you get more of the story from the book.

Gillian takes the reader down a dark rabbit hole of intrigue, deceit, lies, cover up, and murder. This is such a twisted story, that it will leave the reader guessing what truly happened until the very end when everything is reveled. Even if you have watched the movie and know how it is going to end, I still recommend that you read the book. With the book you are able to see a more in depth view of the story than what the movie shows you. Gillian takes you on the craziest ride of your life, that you won't want to get off of. This is a must read for anyone who likes mystery stories, because you will be trying to solve one of the biggest mystery's of all time. What really happened to Amy?

The Lantern's Ember Review

Happy Halloween!

 So we have now arrived to my favorite holiday, Halloween, and I have been saving this review for today, because it is perfect. Today I will be reviewing The Lantern's Ember by Colleen Houck, and this is the perfect Halloween story. Colleen takes you into a world of how Halloween started and while reading this book you will start to see all the Halloween stories you are used to.

Ember is a witch that feels drawn to the Otherworld and she isn't sure why. Jack is a lantern, and has been watching over Ember ever since she was a child. Ember will do anything within her power to make it through the crossroad and into the Otherworld, even accept help from a Vampire. When Ember is brought into the Otherworld, Jack must leave his post and go chasing after her to try and bring her back home. While in the Otherworld, Ember meets creatures like Vampires, Demons, Witches, Werewolves, invisible men, Frankenstein, and even the boogieman makes an appearance. Colleen brings you into another world where creatures that we have only believed to be made up exist. She weaves a story that introduces how our favorite Halloween stories were created in a way, and all of her creatures make you think about one's you have heard before. This story will have you guessing until the end, and trust me when I say there is a twist that you never saw coming, and couldn't even begin to guess what it was until it his dropped on you like a bomb.

This book will get you in the Halloween spirit, even after all the ghouls have gone home for the night!

Carrots: A Shelby Nichols Adventure Review

Happy Halloween Eve!

  So I have a review coming out tomorrow on Halloween, however I just got done reading this super intense amazing book, and I can't wait to review it. Carrots by Colleen Helme, is a non-stop action adventure, filled with gangsters, action, laughter, obsession, and carrots. This book was suggested to me last week by one of my co-workers and when I started reading I couldn't put it down. It was so good that before I even finished the book, I went ahead and ordered the rest of the 11 book series which will be here Thursday. I am already having trouble waiting a couple of days...

Shelby was just your ordinary run of the mill stay at home mother, until she decided to pick up some carrots for dinner and her entire world changes. She starts to hear people's thoughts, and this leads her down a dangerous and thrilling adventure ride, where she learns things about herself, and the people around her. The things she gets herself into will make you laugh, and be on the edge of your seat wanting to know what happens next. You will want to kill some of the characters, slap them, cuss them, and will definitely fall in love with them.

I want to share a quote from Carrots with you, because when I read it I laughed, and could relate to how Shelby felt in that moment, and hopefully you will feel the same.

"I pulled into the parking lot, but all the close spots were taken, and I ended up parking so far away that I knew I'd get soaked. Did I really need the Carrots? I turned off the engine and without the wipers going, I could barely see out the windshield. I waited for a few minutes, hoping the rain would let up, but when it didn't, I knew I'd have to make a run for it."

The Night Circus Review

Hey Guys!

 Can you believe October is almost over? This year has been going by so fast. With keeping to the Fall theme, today I am reviewing The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. This book is so beautifully written that you will be caught up in the disappearing, re-appearing circus world. This book has magic, mystery, forbidden love, and suspense. What more could you ask for in a nail biting wild adventure ride.

Celia and Marco are like Romeo and Juliet thrown into the glorious backdrop of the circus. Celia is groomed to be the best magician out there, and is supposed to hate Marco. Marco has been taught that Celia is the enemy and he must destroy her. When they start falling in love they see each other in a different light, and must keep their romance a secret from their instructors. Erin brings these characters struggles together, and takes the reader on a mysterious, magical ride that you won't want to get off of. I didn't want to put this book down when I read it, and I had to know how everything ended. This story is written in such a way that it will keep the reader guessing until the very end, and will take you on so many twist and turns that you get lost in this amazing adventure.

Girl At The Grave: A Review

Hello my fellow readers!

 Keeping with the amazing Fall weather we are having, I wanted to review a book that fits right in with Halloween. That book is called Girl at the Grave by Teri Bailey Black. This book is set back in 1849, and has everything that you could want in a book. It has murder, romance, mystery, and suspense. The book follows a young girl, Valentine, who witnessed her mother killing someone, however when the murders start happening again, she goes on a dangerous and mysterious journey to revel the truth.

 "Valentine has spent years trying to outrun her mother's legacy. But small towns have long memories, and when a new string of murders occurs, all signs point to the daughter of a murderer. 

Only one person believes Valentine is innocent—Rowan Blackshaw, the son of the man her mother killed all those years ago. Valentine vows to find the real killer, but when she finally uncovers the horrifying truth, she must choose to face her own dark secrets, even if it means losing Rowan in the end."

I will admit I love a good murder mystery and this book reminded me of Agatha Christie's stories. It gives you just enough clues on who it could be, however when the truth is reveled, it will be someone you never expected. Valentine is a strong, independent character, who has had to learn to take care of herself, and practically grow into an adult before her time. During her journey, you meet her best friend Sam, and Rowan, who is the son of the man her mother killed. It turns out that when her back is against the wall she does get support from someone who you wouldn't have thought would give their support to her, Rowan. 

Valentine will put her life on the line to track down a killer to prove if her mother was really innocent or not. The reader is transported to a time when the justice system was ruled by money, and you get to be right along with Valentine as she navigates murder, romance, friendship, and scandal. Sam and Rowan bring about two separate personality types that both have their positives and negatives. Teri takes you on a journey through a time where anyone could be convicted of murder and where a murder could hide behind lies. 

Plus the book cover is what drew me to this book in the first place, which I have provided below. Once the cover piqued my interest, I read the description and knew I had to know how the story ended.

If you are a fan of a good who done it, and love not knowing who the killer is until the last second, than this book is for you. It also puts you into the fall spirit and this is one book you don't want to put down for one second, because you will have to know what happens next, and who the killer is.
